Overview

The Transcend JetDrive Lite 360 256GB is a fast, compact memory card upgrade for a MacBook Pro's SDXC card slot. Installing the JetDrive Lite 360 only takes a few moments, and is similar to adding a SD card to a digital camera.

The box contains:

  • Transcend JetDrive Lite 360 256GB Memory Card

This is a non-volatile upgrade for your MacBook up to mid 2015 MacBook Pro 15' with Retina. Unlike other MacBook Pro storage upgrades that combine with its internal storage to create a new virtually combined disk, the JetDrive Lite 360 can be easily removed. There are multiple modules to choose from depending on the year and model of your MacBook or MacBook Pro.

The Transcend memory card arrives in a small box and offers an optional downloadable Mac app to enable extra features. The process for adding this hardware upgrade is as simple as plugging it into the MacBook Pro's memory card slot.

It can be used like a fast SD card for extra storage or with the help of the JetDrive Toolbox app, it offers Power Save and Recovery. Use the Recover function to restore accidentally deleted MP3, videos, images, and PDF files. Enable the Power Save function to automatically eject the JetDrive Lite 360 before the Mac enters Standby mode and remount it upon the next wake up.

Transcend built its JetDrive Lite 360 to be resistant to water, shocks and dust. If you happen to take your MacBook Pro to the desert to edit video during a video shoot, then this is the card to bring along for backup.

Easy installation and 256GB of storage sounds great but if it is not fast, why even consider it? They are built with high quality MLC flash chips and are rated to achieve read speeds of up to 95MB/s and write speeds of up to 60MB/s. Use the memory for fast TimeMachine backups from within your Mac, now that is cool.

Transcend Lite For Mac Os

Use the JetDrive Lite 360 for fast backups, rendering large photo sets and much more. This memory disk would also be great for transferring your massive iTunes and iPhoto libraries too.

Final Thoughts

The Transcend JetDrive Lite 360 upgrade does exactly what it says it will, expand the MBPro's internal storage space with an extra 256GB of high speed memory. If your MacBook Pro 15' is like mine, its internal memory storage is always full and this card makes for a quick and worthwhile upgrade.

A caveat I see with the JetDrive Lite 360 is that it is not compatible with the MacBook Pro that has the Touch Bar, as it does not have a memory card slot. However, the next macOS should recognize the JetDrive Lite 360 like any SD memory card. If your budget for an internal memory card expansion kit is smaller, consider Transcend's JetDrive Lite 360 128GB option.

With everything considered, installing and using a JetDrive Lite 360 256GB in a MacBook Pro 15' with Retina screen provides a non-permanent upgrade option that anyone should be able to do on their own. The upgrade takes seconds and will give any user peace of mind that they can continue to work on projects that demand hundreds of gigabytes of fast storage with a recovery option.

Transcend Information, Inc., a global leading producer of storage and multimedia devices, is announcing the launch of its new JetDrive Lite line of flash expansion cards geared to the MacBook Pro with Retina display, and to the MacBook Air. Transcend is offering four different models — the JetDrive Lite 130 — in both 64GB and 128GB capacities, the JetDrive Lite 300 — in 64GB capacity only, the JetDrive Lite 350 — in both 64GB and 128Gb capacities, and the JetDrive Lite 360 — in both 64GB and 128GB capacities. These JetDrive Lite flash cards are specifically designed to have a flush profile with the corresponding specific MacBook models, providing an easy and instant increase in storage capacity.

Utilizing one of Transcend's new JetDrive Lite expansion cards provides lots of additional space to store, backup and/or carry lots of music, movies, photos and personal documents. For example, one of the 128GB JetDrive Lite cards is able to store over 60,000 high-resolution photos or images, 32,000 MP3 songs, 32 hours of full HD video, and a seemingly endless amount of documents. Once inserted into your compatible MacBook Pro with Retina display or MacBook Air, the JetDrive Lite expansion card does not stick out from the body of your MacBook like many memory cards, but remains flush with the exterior surface of the laptop body, allowing it to be left in place for on-the-go storage.

The JetDrive Lite series of expansion flash cards utilize top-tier MLC NAND flash memory chips, and are rated for sequential read speeds of up to 95MB/s, and sequential write speeds of up to 60MB/s. This level of performance results in a significant reduction in data transfer times regardless of file size; which is particularly beneficial to graphic artists, photographers and video editors, who often work with ultra-high-resolution video and images.

Transcend's JetDrive Lite series of flash expansion cards feature built-in ECC (error correction code), and also utilize advanced wear-leveling algorithms to ensure consistent performance over the lifespan of the card. The JetDrive Lite expansion cards are produced utilizing a special COB (Chip-on-Board) method, which makes them completely impervious to dust and water. Durability-wise, the JetDrive Lite cards are rated for 10,000 insertion/removal cycles, are fully tested for reliability and compatibility, and are backed by Transcend's Limited Lifetime Warranty.

The 64GB models of the JetDrive Lite expansion flash cards carry an MSRP of $49.00, with the 128GB versions at an MSRP of $99.00. The compatibility chart below shows which JetDrive Lite model corresponds to which MacBook Pro with Retina display or MacBook Air.
